DotCloud adds vertical scaling to its PaaS offering

DotCloud has become the latest PaaS (platform-as-a-service) provider to add features typically associated with IaaS (infrastructure-as-a-service) offerings, this time by enabling vertical scaling, the company said Tuesday. Typically, PaaS providers allow horizontal scaling, where customers deploy code on multiple servers and add more servers as they need them, with traffic distributed across the servers.

Cloud security registry slow to catch on

Last August the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) announced at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas a registry that it hoped would serve as a place for prospective cloud users to go to easily inspect and compare cloud vendors’ security controls. But to date, only three companies have submitted their cloud security data, making the registry of limited use.

Amazon comes out on top in cloud data transfer speed test

If your enterprise finds itself needing to transfer a lot of data in the cloud, beware: Depending on where the data’s being moved to, it can take a long time. A study investigating the amount of time it takes to transfer 12TB of data from one cloud to another shows there can be up to a 25 times difference in transfer speed among providers.

Quantum unveils enterprise-class cloud backup services

Quantum today announced an enterprise-class backup service that includes data deduplication aimed at protecting data in virtual server environments. The new cloud service is built on Quantum’s vmPro virtual machine backup software and its new virtual deduplication appliance, the DXi V1000, which was also unveiled today.
